Once you’ve connected Byword to Google Search Console, you can have Byword automatically index your content for you. This speeds up how quickly Google finds and ranks your new content.

What is indexing, and why is this important?

Just because Google has found your site’s content doesn’t mean it’ll actually appear in search results. For your content to appear on results pages and start generating traffic, it needs to be indexed.

Getting your content indexed can be a lengthy process, especially for newer sites. Byword helps accelerate this process by connecting with the Google Indexing API, allowing your content to start receiving traffic as quickly as possible.

This is an advanced Byword feature that requires careful setup. Please follow all steps below carefully.

Setup process

Step 1: Create a Google Cloud Project

To get started, first head to Google Cloud Platform and create a new project.

Step 2: Enable required APIs

Next, you’ll need to enable two APIs. Visit each link and click “Enable”:

Step 3: Create a service account

We’ll then head to the service accounts page, and create a new service account.

Fill out the details on the following page. These don’t affect functionality - just use details that make sense to you.

You may be asked to fill in two optional steps around granting access. You can skip both of these and hit ‘Done’.

Step 4: Create a JSON key

In your service account dashboard:

  1. Click the dots next to your newly created service account

  2. Hit “Manage Keys”

  3. Click “Create new key”

  4. Make sure JSON is selected, and hit “Create”

This will create and download a key file that we’ll use in Byword.

Step 5: Add service account to Search Console

The final setup step is to:

  1. Take the email that was associated with your service account (e.g., byword-indexing@byword.iam.gserviceaccount.com)

  2. Add it to your Search Console as an Owner

  3. You can do this by heading to Search Console and clicking “Add User”

Note that Owner permissions are required for indexing to work.

Step 6: Configure Byword

Now you’re ready to:

  1. Head back to the Byword indexing dashboard

  2. Upload the JSON key that was downloaded earlier

  3. Authenticate with your sites

Byword will run a quick check to make sure everything has worked correctly, and then you’ll be able to enable automatic indexing.

How it works and limitations

When you have automatic indexing enabled, Byword will submit URLs from your site’s sitemaps to Google’s indexing API on a daily basis. There are a few important things to understand:

Indexing quotas

  • Google has a limit of 200 URLs per day, per Google Cloud Project

  • If you only have one site using this feature, Byword will index 200 URLs per day

  • If you have multiple sites using the same key, Byword will evenly distribute your quota (e.g., 4 sites = 50 URLs per site per day)

  • You can create multiple Google Cloud projects (with separate service accounts and keys) to increase your quota

Plan requirements

  • Automatic indexing requires a Byword subscription

  • The starter plan allows indexing a single site

  • All other plans allow indexing an unlimited number of sites

Important notes

Byword submitting a URL to the indexing API is not a guarantee that the URL will get indexed. However, it significantly increases the probability and decreases the timeframe for indexing.
